Dr. Dorothy C. Moyer

Dorothy and I were both members of the KSTC Class of 1959. We were working on plans for our 50th Reunion in May, 2009. She and I, along with Helen, worked as waitresses in Atlantic City for several summers. Over the years I would see her at KU and in the Reading area. She will be with us in spirit at the 50th Reunion and for a long time into the future. My sincere sympathy to her family.

With many wonderful memories to have known and worked with her at Kutztown University.  She has touched many lives, including mine - the way she cared about friends, her thoughtfulness and generosity – her thoroughness and work ethic were always appreciated.

I did not have the pleasure of working with Dottie while she was at KU, but I met her on various occasions after her retirement. Her dedication to KU and to teaching was still obvious. When the department received news of her cancer diagnosis we were certainly saddened but not surprised by the way she valiantly fought the past two years. Know that her contributions to the Elementary Education department are remembered and appreciated.

I wish to express my extreme condolences to Dr. Moyer's family and friends. Dr. Moyer was my Children's Literature professor in the late '80s and served as an inspiration to a beginning teacher. I feel especially sad for the Blandford family, the children of whom I was fortunate to have taught at Wyomissing Valley Preschool around 2002-2005. I was delighted when Dr. Moyer, their great-grandmother, attended a few of their programs at the preschool and I recognized her! We had an extended conversation which I will remember always.  Naturally, I wish her last years could have been spent in better health but I was pleased to see her encounter with cancer termed "a valiant battle." She is an icon at KU and forever in my memories.

Dottie and I became friends in 1972 when she was an outstanding teacher in the Lab School at Kutztown University, and my eldest son was so privileged to have her as his 4th and 5th grade teacher. We continued our friendship especially after I joined the KU faculty in 1987. Many of her close friends received a birthday and an anniversary card faithfully from Dottie. She was that thoughtful. I told her frequently that she was " the salt of the earth." I will miss her terribly. I will miss our "breakfast club" gatherings at the Airport Diner which she always arranged after she retired, and even during her brave battle with cancer. Charlie and I will keep her forever in our hearts.

I knew Dottie first as Miss Clauser when she was my professor at Kutztown State College in the 1960's. Later I knew her as Dr. Moyer when I took classes at KU in the 1970's. She always took a personal interest in me as well as all her students. I was so thrilled she remembered my name. In the last several years, I knew her as Dottie, a fellow choir member at St. John's UCC church in Kutztown. She once told us that her favorite hymn was "It is well with my soul". It is very well with my soul that I had the opportunity to know this great lady.

Dorothy was a past president of the Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and she was an excellent president. She always went the second mile and did a good job of any task. I have missed her for along time and was sad to know she had been so ill and was no longer with us.
